If you know me, you know two things: I love football, and a good storytelling. So when a story like Neymar returning to Santos happens, I see it from both perspectives—as a fan and as a communications professional.

Mini me, always supporting Santos ⚽️
Mini me, always supporting Santos ⚽️

For those of us who grew up in Santos, football isn’t just a game—it’s part of our identity. My family was split: my dad and grandpa were Palmeiras fans, but my mom, the rest of the family and I? 100% Santistas. Every match, every goal, every heartbreak—we lived it. And when Neymar exploded onto the scene in 2010, it wasn’t just about a rising star—it was our hometown kid making headlines worldwide.

But let’s be clear—Santos was already a football powerhouse because of Pelé, Pepe, Elano, Zito, Clodoaldo, Diego, Ganso, and Gabigol. Neymar didn’t create Santos’ legacy, but he revived the club’s visibility for a new generation. His rise brought attention, sponsorships, and global relevance back to the club.

His duo with Paulo Henrique Ganso? Unreal. That 2012 blue centenary jersey? Legendary. Opponents feared them, especially when they wore that iconic blue jersey. They were simply unstoppable, dismantling defenses with ease and making every team in Brazil nervous to face them.

Even fans of rival teams are excited. It’s not just a Santos moment—it’s a Brazilian football moment. And dare I say? Even the world is watching.

Santos is big. We have two World titles, we are the home of Pelé and so many other great players. We have a legacy to honor. We deserve this comeback.

But let’s be honest—he’s far from a perfect idol. His off-field controversies, flashy lifestyle, and questionable decisions make him polarizing. Still, despite everything, his connection to Santos remained. "Eu vou, mas eu volto" (I’m leaving, but I’ll be back) wasn’t just something he said—it was a promise. And now? He’s walking away from $25-30 million at Al-Hilal to return home after 12 years. This is the biggest signing in the history of Brazilian football That’s not just football—it’s a PR move with massive impact.
Nascer, viver e nos Santos morrer é um orgulho que nem todos podem ter 🤍 🖤

Why This Is a PR Masterclass

Neymar’s return is about more than football—it’s about reshaping public perception, rebranding a struggling club, and igniting national pride. Let’s break down why this is a PR play of epic proportions:

1️⃣ Reputation Management for Neymar – Neymar has been criticized for years for his off-field choices, injury struggles, and chasing big-money contracts. Coming back to Santos reframes his image—instead of another player chasing money, he’s now the star who chose heart over paycheck, loyalty over luxury.

2️⃣ A Rebranding Opportunity for Santos FC – Santos needed a major positive story after the club’s first-ever relegation in 2023. Neymar’s return shifts the conversation from failure to revival. It’s no longer just about a club in crisis—it’s about a historic comeback.

3️⃣ Massive Fan & Media Engagement – This isn’t just another transfer; it’s a global event. Neymar’s return has:

✔️ Sent jersey sales through the roof

✔️ Created viral moments on social media

✔️ Driven news coverage across the world

✔️ Reignited excitement in Brazilian football

4️⃣ Elevating the Brazilian League’s Status – For years, Brazil’s top talents have left for Europe. Neymar coming back challenges that norm and shows that the Brazilian league is still competitive. It brings eyes, sponsorships, and a new sense of prestige to domestic football.

5️⃣ A Perfect Setup for the 2026 World Cup – With the World Cup approaching, Neymar has the perfect stage to regain form, stay in shape, and lead Brazil one last time on football’s biggest stage. His return isn’t just good for Santos—it’s a major storyline for Brazilian football’s global reputation.

The Takeaway: Football, PR & The Power of a Comeback

As someone in PR and branding, this moment is fascinating. It’s storytelling, marketing, and audience engagement all in one. The emotional connection between a player and his club, the buzz from fans, the sponsorship potential—this is what great PR looks like in real time.

For brands, sponsors, and the football industry—this is a huge opportunity. Santos FC can use this moment to rebrand, expand its audience, and bring in new revenue.

But as a fan? I couldn’t care less about the business side

I'm also looking forward to the new team formation. We joke about it not being a team, but a "seleção"—or even better, "SeleSantos". I'm just too passionate.

Listen, I know Neymar has made some questionable choices. I know he’s far from the perfect role model. But at this moment? I don’t care. As a fan, I am emotional, I am ecstatic, and I am celebrating like crazy. After a tough 2024 for Santos fans, we finally have something to cheer for. And honestly? That’s all that matters right now. Brazilian football fans are happy!

What Do You Think?

Is Neymar’s return just nostalgia, or is this a game-changer for Brazilian football? And from a PR and marketing perspective, how can Santos maximize this opportunity?

Let’s chat! 🇧🇷⚽️

Neymar is a genius. Much greater than 99% of the players who have ever dared to step on a pitch. Not being the best in the world, in a world with Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo? I don’t think that’s a big problem. Pelé, Zico, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and then comes Neymar. No other Brazilian, at his peak, played better than him. Not Kaká, not Adriano, not even Rivaldo, who, by the way, played at Barcelona in a way that few others managed to replicate.

Off the field is off the field. We all make mistakes - the difference is that he’s always under the spotlight. Let’s focus on what happens on the field what he does outside of it is his…
